Yep, I have not been this pumped about the Hawks Season in a long time. I'm just curious to see how Towes and Kane do in camp. I really want to see them both on the team this year. The rest of the off season moves by the Hawks were mediocre at best. They will still have to overachieve big time to make the playoffs.

The Flyers had an amazing off season. Should contend with the Penguins for top spot in that division.

as for the penguins....i say within 5 years they will win a stanley cup

That depends entirely on their goaltender situation. As of right now I don't feel Fleury is the goalie that will lead them to the cup. It doesn't matter how many goals you score if you can't keep the puck out of your own net.

Marc-Andre Fleury won 40 games last year (a number of those from shootouts) but his G.A.A was close to 3. Then when it came playoff time against a highly skilled team he got dominated.

I thought the Pens should have signed Ed Belfour to back up Fleury this year but now it looks like he will sign to play in another league.

mihaeagle3
08-20-2007, 06:01 PM
within 5 years i think fleury will either have improved or the penguins will have signed a better goalie
if they dont get one within 5 years then ill slap myself silly...plus crosby malkin and staal have alot of room for improvement
also, the fact that crosby played in the playoffs with a broken bone in his foot is pretty astonishing to me
ive played with injuries before but a broken bone in my foot i think would put me out of the line up

mojojojo530
08-20-2007, 06:16 PM
Crosby having room for improvement makes me scared. Very Scared. I have many issues with the kid, mainly that he doesn't play for the Hawks. I don't know, I just haven't warmed up to him yet.

[QUOTE=mojojojo530;10059]That depends entirely on their goaltender situation. As of right now I don't feel Fleury is the goalie that will lead them to the cup. It doesn't matter how many goals you score if you can't keep the puck out of your own net.

There are so many ways to look at things, and the experts agree with you that great teams start from the goaltender out. But I've always had trouble with that philosophy. I mean, if a team allows a lot of goals is it that their goaltender is weak, or are the opponent players shooting the puck just skilled goal scorers? Take the best goal scorers in the NHL and put them up against the best goalies and the shooters find a way to score, find the hole, find a sliver of space the goalie is not covering to put it behind him.

So even though it is against the experts, I've always thought it's better to have a team full of timely scorers and a good, not necessarily great, goalie. When teams struggle in a season it's usually because they are only scoring 1 or 2 goals per game. Even if they have the best goalie and he only allows 1 or 2, they still won't be winning. So many times I've watched a game develop with say a 1-0 score and I'll think they need to score again, they are trying to win the game 1-0 which seldom works. I've also watched so many games where my team is playing great, the goalie is making great save after great save and it's exciting but then I realize going into the third that hey, they haven't even scored yet! All the great plays and saves in the world don't mean anything if they can't score.

If a team can pump in lots of goals during the season, then they can tighten up around playoff time with confidence that they can score when needed. And the goalie should have confidence by the playoffs too because he should have plenty of wins on a team that can score.

A team that can score say 3 or 4 a game can boost the confidence of any goalie to the point that he becomes great in a key game. When a team can only muster 2 goals a game gets scored on, it can be devastating to the composure of the group.

That's why The Penguins are a scary team. They have a great goalie who will only get better and they have young players who can produce 3 or 4 goals a game.

Whew! Sorry, maybe I should have posted this in the "rants" section......!

ami de nikki,

You bring up some interesting points. However when it comes down to Playoff Hockey, it is more than 90% of the the time the goalie that carries the team all the way through. If you look at the G.A.A. of goaltenders in the playoffs on teams that go deep into the post season, often times their G.A.A. is around or under 2.

Examples from last years post season:
Giguere 1.97 (Won Cup)
Emery 2.26 (Lost in Cup Finals)
Miller 2.22 (Lost in Conference Finals)
Luongo 1.77 (Lost in Conference Finals)
Ward 2.16 (Won Cup in 2006)

Fluery 3.77 (Out in First Round)

The Penguins will be fun to watch as the develop together, I mean even Fluery is only in his 4th year, I think.

those are pretty nice numbers, but i dont like those numbers very much...some of the goals may be the goalies' fault but some could have just been from some terrible defense

now also, some of the reasons the numbers are low could be from shot blockers...i know i saw one game where just one specific person had around 10 shot blocks or something like that
i cant tell ya who or in what gamebut i just remember the effort the defense put in

I totally agree with you about playoff hockey. And as you know, Fluery is so far away from his peak that as the whole team matures it looks like a recipe for success. Plus the Pens are due for an upswing, they had some struggling years since they won their last Cup(s).

it stands for goals against average
but like i said...i dont like the numbers because it doesnt show you if it was just a really good goal or a really bad mistake on the goalies part
like everyone knows (or most hockey fans at least), roberto luongo is a genious of a goalie, and if you look at those numbers, they would agree
but for those who dont remember, the goal that did his team in was his fault because he was not ready and thought a penalty was coming...quick shot was released and it went in
and that was the last of the canuks...

ah thank you...makes a bit more sense now

mojojojo530
08-22-2007, 08:29 PM
Yes, you are correct to say that it doesn't say whether or not a goal was the fault of the goalie or defense or whatever, but that is why its called a goals against "average". The numbers are pretty true to form when taken over a period of time. For every goal that is the fault of the defense, another goal will be saved by that same defense at some point via shot block, poke check or whatever. It more or less evens out. Unless you have a terrible defense in which case this entire argument is pointless.

Like wise, for every mistake the goalie makes and lets in a soft goal, he will likely come up with a ridiculous stop at some point. The better goalies is the leauge do the latter more often which is why their average is lower.

That 1 goal Luongo let in was his fault, but it did not affect his G.A.A. at all considering it was just the one goal out dozens he let up. Honestly, he deserved a goof up if you ask me after carrying the team through the early rounds. It just sucked for him it came at the worst possible time.

I really should start betting on hockey games. When my team announcers start giving all the stats and numbers before a game, even during the game, it seems like the game outcome is always opposite of the stats given. Like they announce our goalie has a great record and low GAA against a team, and he gets shelled and pulled after allowing 6 on 14 shots. Or when they announce at the beginning of the third that the team has a great record when tied or leading after 2, then they blow the lead and lose.

I love stats and analyze them all season, but you are right that it doesn't give the whole picture.

mojojojo530
08-22-2007, 08:39 PM
Wow, I'm really surprised at how skeptical you two are about stats, I mean of course the opposite of the norm will happen from time to time. The announcers of every game will bring up the same stats. For instance the leading after two periods stat, and More often than not the team leading after two periods wins...check the record books on that one. Even the most horrible teams in the leauge win most of the time when leading after two periods.

Blackhawks

03-04 Season Record: 20-43-11-8
When leading after two periods: 14-2-5-4

05-06 Season Record: 26-43-13
When leading after two periods: 17-0-4

Look at every team, it all about the same

yeah you both are right about your points...the evening out and the one in my quote
but my personal experiences in my league differ and the way our goalies' gaa is like i suggested though and i tend to favor my personal experiences since i cant recap all the games in an nhl season...not to mention they dont have much room for mistakes at the top
people in my league make mistakes all the time though and their defense doesnt even it out and vice versa...so thats what i was referring too, which probably wasnt the best approach but oh well

Thanks for the idea! Although, there are several reasons why a more animated shirt is not likely to happen, I don't have the time to design a specific shirt like that and from what I've seen, simple is usually better.

I'm waiting on my heat press to arrive and production will begin. Opening night for the Hawks is against the Wings this year. I'm hoping to sell through a bunch of these outside the stadium that night.

I'm sure I could, problem is coming up with the custom design takes a sort of artistic talent that I'm lacking. I have decent equipment to print the shirts, its just creating designs is not as easy as one would think.

I've already been asked to print shirts for my buddies college track team, best part is they are going to design them, I just have to press them.

I don't mean to peddle my wears here, but if you want something done with whatever team you want, just let me know.

Wikipedia know all :

"Norris bought the team in the summer of 1932 and merged it with his Shamrocks. Norris' first act was to choose a new name--the Red Wings. Earlier in the century, Norris had played on one of hockey's early powers, the Montreal HC, nicknamed the "Winged Wheelers." Because of the team’s location in Detroit, the Motor City, Norris transformed the club's logo into the first version of the Red Wings logo as it is known today."

Doesn't explain the "Red" part but you understand where "Wings" came from. I'm guessing red just rolls off the tongue.

Need to get back on track for a NC run this year. GO BLUE!! *going through withdrawal* I need to see some Big Ten, SEC, Big XII action soon .... really... next week can't get here fast enough.
